The name itself is Anglo-Saxon deriving from a hedge belonging to someone named Osa. It was first recorded in a charter in 1176, when Henry II was referring to the abbot’s woodland property to the Abbot of St Albans. The nearest places that surround Osidge are Cockfosters, New Southgate, Arnos Grove, Southgate, Oakwood, Oakleigh Park, Brunswick Park and Friern Barnet. It is not seen as a separate locality by the residents of Southgate, rather a part of it.
